Pilates Flow - Movement in the flow

June 20, 2022, by Maria Felsner

You've probably also come across the term Pilates Flow over and over again and asked yourself the question, what exactly does it mean?

Feel the sense of lightness in the movement!

When we talk about flow in Pilates training, we mean that the individual exercises are performed at the right pace. Uncontrolled, jerky movements are avoided. And rarely do we practice an isolated exercise.

Once we are familiar with the exercises, we let the individual exercises flow smoothly into each other. Smoothly and yet controlled. Thus we come into a flow of movement, the so-called flow.

Once we are familiar with the exercises, we let the individual exercises flow smoothly into each other. Smooth and yet controlled.

But in order to really feel this flow of movement, it takes a lot of practice. Also the automatic conversion of the Pilates principles during training must already be learned.

But this alone is not enough. Our body dynamics can be irritated despite the smooth interaction of the principles. Be it through lack of concentration, fatigue or when we are tense for whatever reason.

Mostly, however, it is old patterns that have become stuck, be it in thinking or in certain movement patterns. Changes in these patterns take time. This applies to thinking as well as to our body and its movement dynamics.

Break movement and thought patterns

To break these old patterns, such as having to do "everything perfectly", we must succeed in following our own impulse. We must perceive the blockages that inhibit us. Only then can we break free from them.

How do we manage to break free from old patterns in order to move carefree?

My core idea is: "Just move". Trust your inner strength and dynamism. You can achieve a lot with little tension in your body. Get rid of the idea that an exercise has to make you sweat for it to work. Or that muscles only get strong when you push yourself to the limit. Or that you have to run hundreds of miles to lose weight. Or...

Put the focus on ease.

If we succeed in this redirection, we slowly but surely come into a dynamic of flow. We thereby come deeper into moving without feeling the need to move the body. The impulse comes involuntarily from within.
Let it Flow. Let it flow!

Become coherent in the movement

Your training, of whatever kind, can only feel good if it is coherent for you.

This means that you don't practice Pilates just because it strengthens you and shapes the body. Or because you want to look like Barbara Becker. No, the motivation should be too,

  • to find one's own personal attitude and
  • to find the center, physically and mentally,
  • and dedicate themselves to it.

This creates physical and mental stability and carrying capacity.

If you have found this for yourself, it is not set forever! Why? many will now ask themselves...

  • Because this is the basis for continuous further development.
  • As a result, you increasingly come to enjoy and feel the joy of moving. Your body and mind break free from the stagnation of your patterns and begin to unfold. No matter how old or young you are.

This potential change and resulting growth is a hallmark of aliveness.

But as we all know: Grass does not grow faster when you pull on it.

"A few well thought out movements, done correctly in a balanced sequence, are better than hours of sloppy practice or forced contortions."

Patience and mindfulness

If you want to change your body and also your mind, you need patience and the mindfulness to perceive your own limits.

You are welcome to leave your comfort zone, but not by force. Nothing can be forced. Positive changes only occur when we sharpen our senses, including our body sense.

Everyone knows that experiences, thoughts and, of course, feelings get stuck in the deepest layers of our body. They can only be released with the help of practice, repetition, mindfulness and, last but not least, patience.

This knowledge is also the basis for our Training calendar built. If we train according to these principles, we form a conscious body awareness. We get more and more into the flow and thereby feel how we become more and more independent and detach ourselves from all the old patterns.

Conclusion: The more we move, the more agile we become. Physically as well as mentally! The more open and balanced we become, the easier it is to get into the flow.

So we let it flow and experience a certain lightness in all circumstances.

In this sense, Go with The Flow
