Articulation of the spine: what does it mean? And what does it bring?

by Maria Felsner

If you've been doing our online Pilates course for any length of time, you'll probably notice the emphasis in many of the exercises on the Articulation of the spine be noticed.

Why we talk about articulation in the spine and why it is so important, we would like to describe to you in this article.

General

You may know the English saying: "Use it or lose it". We can apply this saying to many things, including our body, that is, our fascia, muscles, joints and also our mind.

Our species is designed to move and stay active. Physically as well as mentally. From the day we stop moving and stop increasing our consciousness, the body as well as the mind begins to rapid to dismantle.

In order to maintain all the functions of the body, first and foremost our spine must be moved and, above all, strengthened. This also enables the spine to adapt to and counteract all the loads that act on the body.

If the spine loses this function, the movements become increasingly uneconomical. At the same time, the spine loses stability. Pain spreads, mobility decreases. And in addition to the physical restriction, mental stability also decreases.

Therefore, in Pilates training we learn to articulate the spine in a controlled manner through conscious control. We thereby build up the torso muscles and become mentally more stable again.

This is also the reason why we do not talk about moving the spine here, but specifically address the articulation that takes place between the cartilaginous surfaces of the individual vertebrae.

First and foremost, through Pilates we support the mobility of the spine via the conscious control (articulation) and not only via large movements. This combination provides a physical as well as mental "dynamic stability".

"I was 19 when I discovered Pilates and I still do it. It's the workout that my body really responds to. It's about aligning, stretching the spine and strengthening the core. Pilates makes me feel my strongest."

These benefits include...

There are scientific studies that have proven the connection of the mobility of the spine with the resulting benefits.

These benefits include:

  • More freedom of movement in the joints.
  • Faster reaction time in the event of unpredictable force development.
  • Promotion of joint lubrication. In technical language, the joint fluid is called synovia. The formation of synovia is crucial for healthy joint cartilage and prevents degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis.
  • Promote neuromuscular control.
  • Stress Relief.
  • Improvement in everyday movements.
  • Improvement of breathing.

Stay motivated

You will only achieve all these benefits if you practice Pilates regularly. That's why we've structured our Pilates classes so that:

  1. ...our program includes all those functional exercises that promote mobility and stabilization of the spine.
  2. ...our workouts adapt to the individual needs of the participants and include exercises that integrate spinal articulation at all levels of movement.
  3. ...participants also engage cognitively with the exercises.
  4. ...the program provides a structure that motivates you to keep at it.

So keep at it! You will feel an increase not only physically, but also mentally. This in turn will positively on your quality of life impact.

We are happy to be able to accompany you on this journey!

  1. I was looking on google for the meaning of "Articulation of the spine" and then I ended up on this webpage.
And I still don't understand what this means....
    What is Articulation ?

    Reply
    • Articulation in the context of the spine or any other anatomical structure refers to the junction or connection between two or more bones or components. In the case of the spine, articulation specifically refers to the connections between individual vertebrae. These connections are important because they allow for movement and flexibility in the spine while also providing stability and support.
Understanding the articulation of the spine is crucial in fields like anatomy, physiology, and physical therapy because it relates to how the spine functions, moves, and supports the body. Issues with the articulation of the spine can lead to various spinal conditions or injuries, and healthcare professionals need to have a good grasp of this concept to diagnose and treat such problems effectively.
